DR. IVAN F. CAMANOR, MD, MPH&TM, FWACP, FLCPS
Chairman, Board of Commissioners
Dr. Ivan F. Camanor, a seasoned public health professional and distinguished physician, currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Commissioners of the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC). He was appointed in 2024 by His Excellency President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., to lead the Board and provide strategic policy direction to the Commission in promoting transparency, accountability, and efficiency in public procurement and concessions management in Liberia.
Early Life and Education
A proud son of Liberia, Dr. Camanor began his early education at the Swedish Pentecostal Mission School in his native, Foya District and later at the Voinjama Swedish Pentecostal Mission School. He attended Voinjama High School before relocating to Monrovia, where he graduated from the College of West Africa in 1969.
He pursued premedical studies at the University of Liberia (1971) and later enrolled at the A.M. Dogliotti College of Medicine, where he earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree in 1976, becoming one of the early graduates of that institution. As a Hubert H. Humphrey Fellow, Dr. Camanor obtained a Master’s in Public Health and Tropical Medicine (MPH&TM) from the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA.
Professional Career
Dr. Camanor’s professional journey spans over four decades of dedicated service in public health, both nationally and internationally. Following his internship at the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, he began his career as County Public Health Officer for Lofa County (1978–1980). His demonstrated leadership earned him appointment as Director of the Bureau of Preventive Services at the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (1981–1984), where he played a key role in shaping national disease prevention and control policies.
From 1984 to 1987, he served as Chief Medical Officer and Deputy Minister of Health, responsible for public health policy formulation, program development, and oversight of implementation across the country.
Between 1988 and 2008, Dr. Camanor served with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in four African countries, namely: Lesotho, Angola, Eritrea, and Sudan-where he supported public health programs, emergency preparedness, and response interventions in complex humanitarian and disease outbreak settings.
From 2010 to 2016, Dr. Camanor contributed to academia as a Lecturer in Community Health at the Cuttington University School of Public Health, mentoring a generation of young health professionals.
Leadership and Professional Affiliations
Dr. Camanor has served in several high-profile leadership roles within Liberia’s public health and governance sectors. He is a former Chairman of the National AIDS Commission of Liberia and immediate past Vice President of the West African College of Physicians (WACP). He is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians (FWACP) and a Foundation Fellow of the Liberian College of Physicians and Surgeons (FLCPS), where he served from 2009 to 2018.
